On the occasion of the Cybersecurity Monthour Malware Lab decided to dedicate an in-depth analysis to the ransomwaremalware around which a real business has developed, turning hackers from mere attackers into blackmailers and extortionists.
It all starts with theinfection of the device, followed by the encryption (the user can no longer access files, documents, images and other data), redemption (explains how and how much to pay to obtain the decryption key and recover what has been compromised) and payment (It is not certain that giving in to pressure will solve the problem: in 2022, an estimated 19% of the organisations that paid the ransom failed to recover their data).
Companies of all categories and sizes are victims of this new market, totalling more than 236 million attacks globally (year 2022). 42% of these ended in ransom payments.
