As much as people try to keep their attention focused on the content they browse (in order to discover harmful content), they rarely pay attention to the domain names of the websites they visit.
Among the malicious techniques in vogue today are not only phishing and infected download files, but also those involving the Google advertising services.
These are designed to facilitate the paid promotion of products or services by displaying them in search results (displayed at the top of Google results for related queries), or as ads on third-party websites hosting ads provided by Google.
When these links are malicious, they can be identified by generic-sounding titles and descriptions, typos in the domain name or the use of unusual top-level domains (TLDs) such as '.download' or '.site'.
Google is taking cover, but threat actors are moving with greater speed. The latter are increasingly buying up Adv spaces for popular keywords and widely used software tools, such as Notepad++ and KeePass.
