Cyber attacks follow one another. The one that hit Trenitalia last Wednesday is one example among many that have occurred in Italy. Also in the past. New technological solutions, new algorithms and innovative software are the logical solution to deter hackers but also to the security of our communication equipment. "In a war scenario such as the one we are currently witnessing, new technological solutions are an unconventional tool for defending people, territories, and strategies," says Emilio Gisondi, CEO of Defence Tech, which has produced an all-Italian secure communication technology, with the aim of making our country increasingly influential, as well as secure in the field of digital communication, from a technological point of view, and providing support to Ukraine and its territories battered by the ongoing war.
"It turns out that Russia's Achilles' heel is precisely its communications: they have backward systems that are easily traced by enemy forces," adds Gisondi. "We intend to offer Ukraine an additional means of protection by providing NGOs and journalists with our encrypted communications solution to ensure the security of their communications both within Ukrainian territory and to the outside world.
What is it? PYN (Protect Your Network), is a proprietary software solution capable of guaranteeing confidentiality and authenticity to organisations' communications (calls, messages and attachments). And it is currently the only Italian technology capable of detecting the presence of malware within a device. "PYN is secure because it uses standard protocols and encryption algorithms," says Gisondi, "so it is the international scientific community that verifies and validates the security of the technology. And it is secure because, in addition to using algorithms that make communications, such as voice and messages, undecipherable and unintercepted, it guarantees privacy and anonymity to organisations using the technology, which is not the case with the most popular instant messaging apps (i.e. WhatAapp and Signal, for example). The PYN platform, thanks to the technologies used, is in the complete availability of the organisation and therefore no activity of the corporate network can be monitored from the outside'.
"With the algorithms and protocols used, phone calls, messages and attachments become inviolable, considerably increasing the protection and resilience of one's organisation, especially at a time when cyber attacks are becoming more numerous and insidious. It is therefore a method that also serves to prevent what happened to Russia as a consequence of the attack on Ukraine. Communications and computer networks blocked in a short time? "The pervasiveness of technologies has indeed improved capabilities in the military and other fields, but it has also widened the perimeter of vulnerability of organisations and nation-states," explains Defence Tech's CEO. "What we can and must do is create a new approach and a new culture of security, pay attention to the technologies used within public and private organisations, and increase the resistance and resilience of organisations using Italian technologies. In practice, the Italian company's engineers add, it is a solution that gives users full control, with the possibility of creating a real telephone network, autonomous, private and secure.
The suite consists of two elements, an App that installs on iOS and Android devices and a secure telephone exchange that the organisation (companies, professional firms, banks, etc.) can install completely autonomously, in a data centre, in their own offices or in the cloud.
