With Space Keywords We explore a new keyword every day to better understand the domain of space.
Today's keyword is Satellite Communications.
A satellite communication is a network that keeps armed forces, institutions and citizens connected, even when terrestrial infrastructures are not available.
Essential to ensure secure and continuous communication in case of emergenciessuch as floods, earthquakes or blackouts, and in the militaryinternational missions and relief operations, this network also has a direct impact on our daily lives.
In fact, it makes it possible to phone anywhere, supports air and sea traffic, allows tracking of mobile vehicles and receiving images from every corner of the planet. It also offers essential connectivity in isolated or remote areas, contributing to humanitarian missions and the distribution of resources in the most vulnerable contexts.
To strengthen theautonomy and the resilience of European satellite communications, the programme was born IRIS²which stands for Infrastructure for Resilience, Interconnectivity and Security by Satellite, a European project managed by an industrial consortium with the aim of building an advanced, multi-orbit and interoperable satellite network serving governments, businesses and citizens.
