With Space Keywords We explore a new keyword every day to better understand the domain of space.
Today's keyword is Space Situational Awareness.
Space Situational Awareness (SSA) represents the ability to continuously and accurately monitor what is happening in near-Earth space. It is a necessary condition to ensure a safe and sustainable use of space, protecting economies, institutions and citizens.
Without this awareness, the risk of satellites and space stations being damaged or destroyed is real. A strategic activity, therefore, to protect space infrastructures from natural or intentional threats, with a direct impact on the daily lives of millions of people.
This is why the European Union ensures constant and integrated space surveillance, which today already protects more than 600 active satellites through three operational components:
- Space Surveillance and Tracking (SST), which detects and monitors artificial objects in orbit, preventing collisions, uncontrolled re-entries and fragmentation.
- Near-Earth Objects (NEO)which analyses the impact risk of asteroids and other celestial bodies using coordinated observation networks and rapid response protocols.
- Space Weather Events (SWE)which develops forecasting models to assess the effects of solar storms and geomagnetic variations, contributing to the protection of space and ground technologies.
As part of the SST and SWE, Tinexta Defence participates in national and international project activities, contributing jointly with other companies, research institutions and universities.
